Volunteer at the State Fair!

The Sierra Club will have a booth in the Education Building of the Minnesota State Fair. This is one of our best opportunities to get out the word about the Sierra Club and identify new volunteers and activists! In return for volunteering at the Fair, each adult who actively volunteers at the booth receives one complimentary admission to the Fair for the day (value is $11). If you can't make it to the Fair, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Let us know what you are interested in.

no Big Stone II

Otter Tail Power Needs to Clean Up Their Act

After significant public demonstration in support of clean alternatives to Big Stone II at the rally before the June 3 Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) meeting, the PUC surely felt the pressure and was split 50-50 on support for and against Big Stone II, with one commissioner on the fence. In an unexpected move after two days of deliberations, the PUC voted to delay their decision! If the vast level of public concern around global warming and other pollution from building new coal plants like Big Stone isn't enough to convince them, then perhaps uncovering violations of the Clean Air Act at the existing Big Stone plant will impact decision-makers' position on Big Stone II. On June 10, the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit against Otter Tail Power and other co-owners for polluting beyond the legal limit for over a decade. Read our full press release, and learn more about how you can stop Big Stone II by contacting at 612-659-9124.

You too can be a Citizen Lobbyist!

Lobbying is not only for lawyers and legislators! Professional lobbyists use the same skills that people use in everyday situations. Everyday people can have a huge impact on public policy and legislation. With just a little background knowledge of the legislative process, anyone can become an effective citizen lobbyist. Check out the Sierra Club's newly released "Citizen's Guide to Lobbying the Minnesota Legislature."
