Public Hearing Xcel’s Sherco 1&2 Replacement Study
December 5, 2013: 9:30am - 12:00pm
Please join us! Next Thursday, December 5th, the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) is scheduled to make decisions on Xcel Energy’s Sherco 1&2 study that looked at whether or not to install pollution controls or retire/replace Sherco Units 1&2. According to Xcel’s study, with even modest costs for carbon pollution it’s clear Xcel should plan to retire/replace these units.

As you know, Sherco is the largest greenhouse gas emitter in the state. Sherco is on the EPA’s “watch list” as one of the top emitters of toxic mercury and sulfur dioxide in the nation. According to a 2010 Clean Air Task Force report, pollution from Sherco plant is responsible for an estimated 92 deaths, 150 heart attacks and 1,600 asthma attacks every year.
Although the PUC will not make final decisions on the fate of the Sherco plant, the PUC can send a strong message to Xcel Energy that it is time to make the right choice and plan for the replacement of Sherco 1&2 with clean energy, especially wind, solar and energy efficiency. We expect a decision at this hearing on what Xcel should consider in its next long term 10-15 year energy plan (due in early 2014.)
